For about a decade, Davey Harms, then known as Mincemeat or Tenspeed, made extremely abrasive yet somehow danceable rhythmic noise using only mixers and pedals. After gradually incorporating synthesizers and samplers, he retired the Mincemeat project and released a tape under his own name before debuting his World War moniker. While his palette has expanded, the electro-shock headrush and inventiveness of his earlier work remain on World War's Soundsystem, even if the album isn't quite as caustic. Some of the tracks contain trash can-like clanging beats battling with elastic voices and cheap-sounding samples that could very well be played from some sort of electronic toy. "Brass Monkey"-like sax blurts and other odd samples get punched in, and then consumed by overwhelming masses of feedback and thudding kick drums. Tracks like "Same in the World Red" and "Expert Man (The Refined Man)" contain thumping 4/4 beats inspired by early acid house, but with the noise and grittiness of industrial. "No Time 4 Tremor" somewhat resembles a mangled, blown-out dancehall rhythm, with buckets of heavy, crashing echo. It's heavily disorienting, but it's clearly more fun than it is menacing.
