Although audiences had already tasted
Pussycat's exquisite sound via their 1976 worldwide hit single "Mississippi," the fact that their
Souvenirs LP slipped into the U.S. market the same year (alongside
First of All) gave fans an entire set of other goodies. And, although the band had drawn immediate reference to
Brotherhood of Man from their first recorded breath,
Souvenirs proved that they had much more to offer.
For those missing "Mississippi," there was the marvelous "Smile," which gave the band their second U.K. hit -- breaching the Top 30 in January 1977. Following it up, of course, is their now classic, if long forgotten "My Broken Souvenirs," whose perfect mix of hook-filled music and airy vocals rates among
Pussycat's best material. Elsewhere, the album rounds up the soft bite of "Don't Play Cassanova," "Get It Higher," and "The Easy Way" and, for the true enthusiast, the Netherlands CD reissue of this classic LP includes four bonus tracks.
Pussycat themselves would fall off the U.K. radar completely by early 1977, and would bypass the American market altogether. But the band would continue to scorch their way across Europe, a deliciously, sweetly sexy diva trio. ~ Amy Hanson
