This is definitely a CD that you can't feel comfortable with after only one or two listenings. However, a good deal of classic prog is also like that. The first example that comes to mind is
Yes' Close to the Edge. The music is all over the place with so much going on that the ear is overwhelmed on the first few listenings. That said, once you have given the disc more of a chance to sink in, you start to be able to fully enjoy the group's fusion-ish approach to progressive rock. You will hear elements of such artists as
Frank Zappa, ELP, and others. However,
Spaced Out really shines in the band's use of rhythms. That is what sets them in a world of their own. ~ Gary Hill
