Picking up where his cover of
Sade's "Love Is Stronger Than Pride" left off (from his shared release with
Reinhard Voigt,
Speicher 2), "Speaker" shows
Michael Mayer once again in stomping, storming, pummel-house mode. The track winds up gradually, with
Mayer affably speaking about being a speaker, until it breaks into a contained frenzy that resembles
Green Velvet's "Flash." Flip side "Sneaker" -- the stronger of the two tracks here -- is more of a hyper-kinetic
Moroder-style thump-a-thon, built on a blitzing rhythm and racing waves of synths. Not as fascinating as the majority of
Mayer's 12" or compilation-exclusive work, though it's hardly a let down.
