John McDowell's SPEAKING THE MAMMA TONGUE mixes together a variety of sounds, styles, and cultures. In fact, this album would be best described as a musical melting pot. For example, "Dun Gabow" uses a marimba to mimic a pan (steel) drummer and the music of Trinidad. "Owl Dream," with its Native American flavor, centers on a mystical flute melody combined with rattles and throbbing percussion. Other selections such as "Maybe We Should Stand Back" and "Three Deva Chant" use the voice extensively. On the latter, a female vocalist soars above the droning keyboards and dramatic cymbal swells. The singer uses syllabic or wordless singing here; she also employs an exotic, Middle Eastern mode. The most interesting track on SPEAKING THE MAMMA TONGUE is McDowell's solo piano piece called "Piano Raga." This brooding New Age work is influenced by the Hindu raga. Here, McDowell uses this concept to explore a succession of dark musical emotions.
