A compilation of previously unreleased collaborations between the Detroit MC and the DJ Premier-cosigned producer MoSS, recorded between 1997 and 2000, Special Reserve shows Trice as a formidable former battle rapper in his pre-Shady Records days. He’s a menace on the mic on “Got Hungry,” venting passionately over vintage DJ scratch samples about the constant struggle of Detroit life. And atop MoSS’ sinister steel drums, “You’ve Been Slain” is a harrowing account of the gruesome final minutes of a man’s life.
