One of the more obscure releases by
Kenny Barron, this hard to find CD of solo piano is worth seeking. Recorded in a Japanese studio in 1982,
Barron's program includes an inspired take of
McCoy Tyner's challenging "Passion Dance," a droll version of
Thelonious Monk's "Reflections," an enchanting arrangement of
Randy Weston's "Little Niles," and a fairly straight-up performance of
Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage." Also present are two fine originals by
Barron: the haunting "Dolores Street" and the aptly named "Spiral." ~ Ken Dryden
