Thee Sixpence was a California band that recorded a number of singles for Bill Holmes's All American record label in the early to mid sixties. The band was formed around the vocal talents of Lee Freeman and guitarists Steve Rabe and Ed King, and the line up was completed by bass player Gary Lovetro, drummer Gene Gunnels and organist Mark Weitz. The music of Thee Sixpence was a pure garage style consisting of original and cover songs, with a raw, exciting sound very similar to many other acts of the day such as The Chocolate Watch Band, The Sonics, Shadows Of Knight and many more. The main claim to fame of this band was a song that they recorded called "Incense and Peppermints" that some of the band members re-recorded a couple of years later when they became The Strawberry Alarm Clock. The recording on this compilation for the most part is very noisy and sounds like they were taken from records rather than the master tapes. This album compiles 11 tracks that were originally 45 RPM singles on the All American Label. Liner notes are very basic and contain only band line ups and recording information but no other band information or history. The CD is housed in a colorful digipack and the tracks are credited to All American Productions Limited making it the first legitimate release of this band's material on CD format.
