Sulaco's eponymous debut EP may sound remarkably familiar to unsuspecting listeners -- not unlike early-2000s extreme metal favorites
Mastodon, for that matter. Of course, this is only natural given that
Sulaco leader Erik Burke shares a common bond with certain members of
Mastodon thanks to their past involvement in '90s underground metal legends Lethargy. Like their Relapse labelmates,
Sulaco's music offers an unorthodox collection of death metal, grindcore, and other modern metal devices that is nearly impossible to describe. Neither as lengthy, nor quite as busy as
Mastodon's material in terms of technical execution, standout tracks like "Patience Worn Thin" and "Motion in the Grid" prove surprisingly immediate and memorable despite their brazen inaccessibility. Given time and imagination to expand their reach,
Sulaco seem poised to impress when the time comes time for a proper album. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
