Pontiak are the
Carney brothers, a power trio of siblings.
Sun on Sun is their debut, and while they aren't exactly reinventing the wheel, they have managed to come up with a fairly personal sound. There's a heaviness, but it's not really heavy rock and it's certainly not metal. There's an expansive psychedelic element, but you couldn't really call it psychedelic rock, either. The guitarist is no virtuoso, but turns in some great solos and does some nice feedback work as well (instruments are not listed with the names). The rhythm section is really locked together (as sibling rhythm sections often are) even when the tempo is surging back and forth, like at the beginning of "White Mice." To their credit, they're never in a hurry to get anywhere, instead preferring languid tempos and allowing the songs to develop at their own pace. The addition of organ on a couple tracks and the acoustic closer provide a nice bit of variety to their power trio jamming. A solid debut.
