Curb's celebrates the 60th Anniversary of the legendary Sun studios with this double-disc set that just happens to contain 60 highlights. That's one for every year since Sun's 1952 inception and it gives the compilers lots of room to serve up the standards from
Elvis,
Jerry Lee,
Cash,
Carl Perkins,
Roy Orbison,
Jackie Brenston,
Howlin' Wolf, and
Rufus Thomas, finding space for sides by
Billy Lee Riley,
Warren Smith,
Sonny Burgess,
Jack Clement,
Carl Mann, and
Charlie Rich. There's perhaps too much
Johnny Cash here -- over a sixth of the set is devoted to him -- and while these cuts are here instead of better sides by lesser-known names, nothing here is bad and, for the price, this offers a lot of bang for the buck and illustrates why Sun remains legendary 60 years after its first release. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
