This melancholy date (released for the first time in 1986) was clarinetist
Tony Scott's last before heading for Europe. He was mourning the deaths of many of his heroes, and among his pieces are "Misery (to Lady Day)," "Rememberance Of Art Tatum" and "Requiem For Hot Lips Page." On three selections
Scott is backed by the classic
Bill Evans Trio (with bassist
Scott LaFaro and drummer
Paul Motian); the
Tatum piece ironically does not have any pianist, and two selections are duets with
Evans. In addition,
Scott plays baritone and guitar on one tune apiece and duets with guitarist Juan Sastre on the final number. But, even with the strong playing, the downbeat nature of the material makes this album of only historical interest.
