After much anticipation, S.M. Entertainment and Capitol Music Group unveiled K-pop supergroup
SuperM in 2019. Attracting fans of
Shinee,
EXO, and NCT sub-units
NCT 127 and WayV, the septet made their big debut with
SuperM: The 1st Mini Album, a short set of five tracks that included the monstrous first single "Jopping." A portmanteau for "jumping" and "popping," the epic dance anthem charted across the globe and helped push the EP to a historic debut atop the Billboard 200, making
SuperM the first Korean act to top the U.S. chart with a debut effort. In addition to blending hip-hop, electronic, pop, and R&B, the group also incorporated East Asian orchestration for "I Can't Stand the Rain" and trap for "Super Car." With just a handful of songs,
SuperM put their mark on K-pop history and set the stage for more to come. ~ Neil Z. Yeung
