This is Mark Insley's follow-up to Tucson, and it was worth the wait for more of his songs. First is the band, who supports and stays with him through all the changes that his music takes, including the shifts from heartbreak country ("Running Back to You") to a jangling broken-love song ("My Neighbor's Dog"). Special mention must be made of some stunning guitar work by both Greg Leisz and Rick Shea and the solid foundation provided by Bob Glaub and David Raven. There is some strong supporting vocal work by Clare Muldaur, daughter of Geoff Muldaur. There is a risk and edge to this record that propels it forward and compels the listener into the songs. He takes a number of close examinations of the indecisiveness and uncertainty in the relationships he sees around him -- the hidden, faded, and shattered dreams that life in these times entails. He wrote five of the nine songs here, and those he didn't write are carefully blended to suit him. There is a coldly numbing version of "Pardon Me (I've Got Someone to Kill)" that is frightening in its casualness and laid-back tone.
