In this live recording of a 1967 Paris concert, Monk's combo, who had stayed together throughout the decade, is particularly loose and interactive. The Quartet was in great demand in the '60s and toured tirelessly, performing a limited, well-known repertoire. Tenor sax man Charlie Rouse offers numerous fluent, creative solos. The legendary pianist was not at the height of his playing in the late '60s, but his increasing use of negative space and new testing of rhythmic patterns keeps his solos fresh and alive.
