Swingin' For The Ride by Janice Friedman Trio - DeepRiffs

Pianist Janice Friedman has been on the jazz scene for some time, yet this is only her third CD as a leader and first to also feature her as a singer. She is a capable accompanist for her mellow vocals, delivering a swinging take of "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" and adding creative licks and dramatic timing to Louis Jordan's amusing "Is You Is." "Summertime" is one of those standards that is in danger of overexposure with the numerous recordings available, but Friedman's playful bossa nova treatment strays from the predictable paths, giving her a chance to show off her formidable chops at the keyboard as well, while also adding percussionist Daniel Sadownick. Friedman also contributes several strong originals, including the picturesque ballad "Seems Like a Dream" and the funky opener "Swingin' for the Ride." Bassist Sean Conly and drummer Diego Voglino make up her strong rhythm section. Perhaps it won't be as long a wait for Janice Friedman's next recording.
