The debut album from the
MC Hammer protégés
Special Generation produced three single releases. The initial release "Love Me Just for Me" is an easy flowing single with crossover appeal; however, it rode the Billboard R&B charts for 21 weeks, peaking at number eight. The second release, "Spark of Love," is probably the best track from
Take It to the Floor. While the first release becomes more soulful in the vamp, the second is a more melodious number. Both compositions offer lead vocal roles by all group members, anchored by Kendrick Washington's lively vocals. The final release was a remake of
the Stylistics classic "You Are Everything," which peaked at Number 90 on the Billboard R&B charts. In addition to the released singles, there are other tracks here that are worthy of recognition, such as the compassionate "Friend" and the romantic "Another Place." The group's uptempo numbers like the title track "Take It to the Floor" and "We Can Dance" are hyped, slamming numbers with rhythms similar to
MC Hammer's recordings. This project should have received more attention. [This version of the album contains a bonus DVD.] ~ Craig Lytle
