Where Detroit producer Jay Daniel’s debut album, 2016’s Broken Knowz, dug into the low-lit bump-and-grind of his hometown’s house music, his 2018 follow-up is a more contemplative affair. Employing a stripped-down kit of synths and drum samples, Tala’s 11 tracks feel like variations on a single, ruminative theme. The stuttering “Rapture” is a tentative head-nodder, moody and muted; “Razi” lays on lush, legato synth leads, while “Lilith” emphasizes his keyboards’ silky textures over nimble drums with an almost hip-hop feel, and “Cherubim” earns its angelic title with playful little riffs that float like feathered creatures. “Aja,” the album’s centerpiece, brings disco accents and liquid funk bass into play, carving a secret passageway from his mind to the dance floor.
