Perhaps capitalizing on the salsa-based opening theme to the TV show Sex in the City,
Salsa in the City features a baker's dozen of jazzy and pop-tinged salsa songs by artists including Azabache, Pepe y Su Orquesta, and Orquesta Gitano. Some of the pop-based numbers fall a little flat, such as the salsa-fied versions of "I Will Survive" by Orquesta Kache and "Still the One" by Orquesta Kalichin, especially when compared to some of the vibrant, more authentic tracks that the collection has to offer. Chief among them are Orquesta Borinquen's "Descarga Borinquen," Cimarron's "Triste Soledad," and Orquesta Gitano's "Mi Promesa de Amor." Other highlights include Candela's "Madre Rumba, Padre, Son" and DJ Vicious V's 16-minute "In the City Mix." It's not the best or most authentic salsa collection around, but
Salsa in the City could still introduce some listeners to the genre. ~ Heather Phares
