What sounds at first blush like just one more formulaic house-beats-plus-diva dance album turns out, on second listen, to be something a bit more subversive than that. Yes, the title track is a model of its genre: sweet, breathy vocals and an irresistibly sad and lovely melody soar above four-on-the-floor club beats and squiggly synthesizers. And, yes, much of the rest of the program follows suit, with "Free" sounding a bit like a Pet Shop Boys outtake and "How Does It Feel?" thumping along in classic mid-tempo disco style. But Waterlilies are equally comfortable in a gutbucket funk mode, as "I Don't Want Your Love" and "Supersonic" demonstrate. Nor are they averse to exploring beatless options, as they do on the basically arrhythmic "Nolion Doll" and "Take My Breath Away" -- not to mention the utterly superfluous a cappella rendition of "Close to You" that ends the album with a whimper. But, up until that point, Tempted proves to be more than the sum of its parts -- a borderline essential album of basically inconsequential music. ~ Rick Anderson
