Back in 2002, Ace released The Arock & Sylvia Soul Story. It took them nearly a decade and a half to finalize The Arock Serock Sylvia Soul Story Continued, but in those 14 years they were able to dive into heavy research, identifying artists marked as unknown on the original tapes and digging up demos by Junior Lewis. His publishing demos aren't the only ones on the disc, either: Don Covay is heard on "Did You Hear," another songwriter acetate that's mixed in among singles from 1962 and 1966 that were rarely heard outside of the New York area. The wondrous thing about this collection of little-heard uptown soul is that it's executed with such precision it seems as if these could be forgotten hits from the golden age of the Brill Building. That the songs are occasionally too overwrought or self-consciously sophisticated doesn't matter: the care is evident and even infectious, evidence of the invention behind this entire scene. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
