COMPILATION

Jazz Round Midnight is Verve's series of cool late-night jazz and Best of Jazz Round Midnight picks highlights from the series, featuring cuts by Stan Getz, Wes Montgomery, Mel Torme, Count Basie, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Billie Holiday, Joe Williams and Sarah Vaughan, among others. Since the series is of dubious worth in the minds of many jazz purists, the sampler could be considered even weaker, but the set is designed for casual listeners, who basically want mood music. As such, the series works well, but the sampler remains a little less fulfilling than the individual artists compilations. ~ Leo Stanley
