The playing on these eight compositions by tenor saxophonist
Matt Renzi is generally pretty free and spontaneous. However,
Renzi's attractive tones on tenor and clarinet, his lyrical approach to improvising, and the three musicians' big ears result in music that is always coherent, has its own logic, and is sometimes surprisingly melodic.
Renzi has fairly original tones and works well with bassist David Ambrosio (who sometimes is a near-equal in setting the direction of the music) and drummer Russell Meissner. Well worth a few listens. ~ Scott Yanow
