Beginning with a luminous version of the The Troggs’ “Anyway That You Want Me” and ending with two parts of “Electric Mainline,” a lunar soundscape to rival any by Pink Floyd, The Complete Works Volume One offers a complete picture of Spiritualized during its first five years. The collection brings together EPs and singles from between 1990 and 1995, many of which reprise (in slightly altered form) songs from Lazer Guided Melodies and Pure Phase. It is rare that a compilation without album tracks can serve as a band’s introduction and its “greatest hits,” but the songs here are wholly emblematic of Spiritualized’s mission. Whereas Spiritualized’s full-length LPs from this period are sprawling and dense, the band’s miniature releases were succinct encapsulations of the its philosophy. Even as it engulfs the listener in torrents of sound, “Why Don’t You Smile Now?” sounds like something you could imagine emanating from a car stereo. With a similarly sunny disposition, “Good Dope / Good Fun” serves as a summation of the band’s early years: “Good dope, good fun / Hey take it right down / Lay back in the sun.” Without shame or irony, Spiritualized pursues its goal: to convince its listeners that a day on drugs can be as blissful as a Sunday stroll.
