Here's a perfect example of a recording that holds great merit for the most part, but is flawed. A CD of
Lee Morgan's work from the Blue Note label in the '60s should last longer than a mere 42 minutes on CD, and should definitely be packed to the brim with his very finest music. Half of the six tracks are among his best: "The Sidewinder," "Ceora," and "Speedball." The other three, while very good in their own right, are not essential, though a version of
Duke Pearson's "Sweet Honey Bee" is one deserving more acclaim in his repertoire. There are other seminal, at-length, greatest-hits packages available by the legendary hard bop jazz trumpeter and his high level bandmates, so this should only be purchased by students or staunch completists. ~ Michael G.
