The Golden Age of Rock & Roll was Sha Na Na's only record to crack the Billboard Top 40. It is nostalgic through and through, nothing but oldies but goodies. The first side or so -- "Lover's Question" through "Wild Weekend" -- appears to have been cut in the studio, while the rest captures the group's crowd-pleasing live act. It's an energetic revue but it's also exhausting, in no small part because it's shtick and nothing but. Perhaps it was fun in concert, but on record it's a chore. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
