Bad Cop's five-song The Light On EP channels the bubblegum side of bands like Wavves and Ty Segall with a shiny, midtempo take on skuzzy garage punk. Lyrically, the songs deal with dark themes, including guitarist Alex Hartness' near-fatal drug overdose and singer Adam Moult's time in jail. Despite the inherent heartache, the songs utilize cute, classic hooks, and the style is partially indebted to glam rock and Brit-pop (Moult quotes David Bowie and Brian Jonestown Massacre as influences) with an emphasis on fat, warm basslines. The titular song is the obvious single, with a deceptively complex melody that builds into the luscious, bittersweet hook "I still kill myself in my mind." In the five songs, a lot of ground is covered. "Post-McDonald's Punks" is a blistering lo-fi punk number, "The Wind" mixes the greasy cool of the Strokes with the indigo pep of MGMT, and the shimmering vocals and classic open-chord jangle of "My Dying Days"' makes it a psychedelic pop song that is as tight and lean as it is sturdy and sweet.
