Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams has written and produced some of rock's most imaginative novelty/tongue-in-cheek lyrics, but has never risen above cult status. He's almost as lyrically twisted as
George Clinton and nearly as prolific, as he churns out CDs quicker than people can find out about them due to poor promotion and publicity. On this set, he shows versatility with tunes spanning from the Jamaican-ish "I Have Touched the Sky" to Southern soul via the wry "Ain't a Nineteen Year Old Got Nothing on You" to the jubilant gospel of "Jesus Is Alive in My Heart." While an ingenious lyricist,
Swamp Dogg's melodies and arrangements are tired and formulaic, particularly in this package. The titles entice you to listen but, once you do, the freshness of topical subjects like "Artificial Insemination" stales fast if just about everything else is lacking. ~ Andrew Hamilton
