Anyone who has ever studied
the Beatles knows that
John Lennon was the true rocker of the group. While all four members of the band loved early rock & roll; it was
Lennon who continually referred to it throughout his career. This Snapper collection from the U.K. offers a killer array of original recordings by many of
Lennon's early influences, and tears it up in the process. While many music fans will be familiar with tracks by
Little Richard and
Carl Perkins, fewer will have ever heard songs by
Jimmy McCracklin and
Bo Carter. There are a whopping 26 cuts here and each of them is a winner. The sound quality is quite good and so is the price. The bottom line is,
Lennon himself would have been hard-pressed to put together a better collection of his own early inspirations. Caveat:
Elvis is missing because of RCA's strict licensing policies. ~ Thom Jurek
