Veteran tenor saxophonist
Charlie Rouse plays some high-quality post-bop on this quintet set with trumpeter
Benny Bailey (in top form), pianist
Albert Dailey, bassist
Buster Williams and drummer
Keith Copeland. The music is quite modern and none of the pieces (originals by
Rouse,
Dailey and
Fritz Pauer, plus two ballads from pianist
John Hicks) have exactly caught on. However, the blend and contrast between
Rouse and
Bailey, plus the strong rhythm section, makes this a set of interest to collectors of acoustic jazz. ~ Scott Yanow
