Tenor saxophonist
Paul Quinichette earned the moniker "Vice Prez" as a strict disciple of
Lester Young's 1950s tenor tone. The
Vice-Pres reissue is a mixed bag of
Quinichette from 1951-1954 with organ combos featuring either
Bill Doggett or Marlowe Morris at the organ helm and a large ensemble including various
Count Basie band alumni: Freedie Green, Gene Ramey,
Buck Clayton,
Dicky Wells, Walter Page, and
Basie. The 26 tracks encompass the original Emarcy album, with seven tracks from the 10" LP Sequel and five previously unreleased tracks. This enjoyable swinging session was reissued as part of the Verve limited edition Elite series in 2000. ~ Al Campbell
