The lead song itself, a great song (one of many!) from
Clouds Taste Metallic, shows
the Lips again doing what they do so well, and quite well at that. The reason to look for this single and its counterpart, however, are the B-sides, which make up the entirety of a late 1992
John Peel Session for BBC Radio in the U.K. The first song here is "Jets (Part 2)," which later surfaced in a separate studio take on
Providing Needles. The mix sounds a bit curious,
Coyne's vocal buried and other instruments suddenly leaping to the fore, but the song itself is great and gets a lively performance. The real find is a cover of
David Bowie's "Life on Mars?," which the band had done for a U.S. flexidisc release earlier that year. The arrangement doesn't vary from the
Hunky Dory original, down to the overdubbed vocals, but it's just
Coyne and piano performing it this time out, and it's quite lovely, bringing out the dreamy pathos of the song. ~ Ned Raggett
