All the
Dave Berry you need, with all but one of the 20 tracks dating from his 1964-66 heyday. Sensibly divided into a 10-song R&B side and a 10-song pop side, it includes all his hit singles -- "The Crying Game," "Little Things," "Memphis," the unfortunate "Mama" -- as well as "This Strange Effect" and "Don't Gimme No Lip Child." Some of the R&B tracks are mediocre; others (especially "Gimme No Lip") growl along neatly. Some of the lesser-known pop numbers are pretty nifty as well, the highlight being "I'm Gonna Take You There," which was penned by
Graham Gouldman (who also wrote hits for
The Yardbirds and
the Hollies in the mid-'60s).
