There have been a number of blues-rock bands called
the Bluesbusters (not to mention at least a couple of reggae bands, as well, who nicked the name from a classic old
Prince Buster single), and this version -- led by keyboardist
T. Lavitz of
the Dixie Dregs and singer/guitarist
Paul Barrére, who had taken the songwriting reins from
Lowell George in the jazz-rock incarnation of
Little Feat -- is about as derivative and uninspired as their name. The group's second album is horribly overproduced, swamping some pretty good funky riffs and hip-shaking rhythms with way too much studio gloss; the leadoff track "Six O'Clock News" has a killer stop-start riff that gives it a certain
Stonesy quality, but
Ricky Keller's smothering, slicked-up production buries all of the song's best qualities.
Nicolette Larson,
Bonnie Raitt and
Barrére's once-and-future
Little Feat partner
Sam Clayton all guest.
