For his second solo LP,
Time Bomb,
Chris Jasper pretty much stuck to the winning sound he used as a member of
the Isley Brothers and
Isley/Jasper/Isley. The crystalline charmer "The First Time" was the first single, making it onto the R&B charts. The mid-tempo tribute groover "Margie" slides along on innocent romantic leanings. The funk was hitting harder on
Time Bomb,
Jasper's second self-produced release, than on his solo debut, "Superbad." Keyboardist
Jasper makes use of the robotic-sounding vocoder synthesizer, à la
Roger Troutman, on slammin' workouts "It's Working," "In Yo' Face," and the playful "Hit on You."
Time Bomb is a nice, mid-development glance at
Jasper's evolving solo sound that didn't come to fruition until
Deep Inside.
