Ranked among the most inflammatory rappers, YoungBoy NBA is also a 20-year-old man with a sense of responsibility. He says it over and over again: he keeps making music mostly to provide for his five children. This new album - his third release in 2020 - is full of references to his offspring and his desire to be a good father. YoungBoy Never Broke Again will never be broke again and neither will his kids. Apparently, rap’s not enough to do that and here he embraces the pop trap wave that has invaded American high schools with Lil Wayne at the helm. In fact, Lil Wayne is invited onto the track My Window in a brilliant fusion of two artists’ crazy voices. Though it’s when his dark side comes out, in the lyrics and production, that YoungBoy shines brightest. On Boom, Big Bankroll and Murder Business, tracks which glorify gang culture, he wakes up his inner gangster and manages to steer Top away from too much sentimentalism. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
