Dipstick's brand of postmodern instrumental music fits well into that odious cliché "impossible to classify." Unlike a lot of music that aims to elude genre boundaries, though, it's not only ingenious but quite fun. The ever-changing mosaic of sounds travels through numerous styles and reference points: twangy late-'50s/early-'60s surf and spy guitar, goofy lounge music, warped circus carousels, beatnik bongos, grinding fuzz axework, dainty Latino riffs, cheesy Western showdowns, action movie soundtracks, woozy modern ambient distortion. Greg Reeves' deployment of more than a dozen instruments -- most of them played by himself -- is woven together in a free-flowing manner, devising dozens of different textures in a fashion that's organic rather than jarring. As a journey through alternate sonic jungles, it's both entertaining and stimulating. ~ Richie Unterberger
