Sometimes strange ideas give the best results. Vibraphonist Alex Grillo wanted to perform the same repertoire with three different trios. He established a corpus of 13 pieces (11 originals plus tunes by Steve Lacy and Thelonious Monk) that he rehearsed with three groups made of a bass instrument and a harmonic instrument. The first trio included pianist Christine Wodrascka and bassist Yves Romain in a pretty much standard formation. The second presented François Castiello on accordion and Didier Havet on tuba -- a much more original pairing. Finally, the third trio included electric guitarist Raymond Boni and baritone saxophonist Daunik Lazro. The three formations were recorded at live concerts held between November 1999 and June 2000, each playing the same set list. Triplett takes the best performances from each trio, and on "Tango Strano" combines all three. The repetitive tango motif is allowed to cross-fade the recordings and present the groups as if playing in one continuous take. On CD this concept provides variety and movement. But more important is Grillo's virtuosity and sensibility on his instrument and the quality of his writing. Playful, lyrical, yet leaving room for out improvisation, his music sounds strongly inspired by Steve Lacy but also by the French tradition (musette and Django Reinhardt, in particular). Highlights include the jam "Shiro Blues" and most of the pieces by the third trio, the atmospheric "Shut, Chut" especially showcasing Boni's underappreciated talent. Elsewhere, the guitarist and Lazro really have something going on and the vibraphonist lets himself be carried away by their vehemence. Recommended.
