With piracy rampant in the Philippines in 2001, and consumers able to buy pirate CD compilations of their favorite hits for much less money than from legitimate retail stores, record companies were making compilations of their own in an attempt to compete. 2001's
Tunogkalye was released by local independent Viva Records and compiles 14 songs recorded by various artists for the company. The album contains songs from the mid-'90s on to and including the year 2000. A number of artists represented here no longer record for the label.
