Turn a Deaf Ear presents the mixed results of a strange meeting between two duos. In the blue corner are laptop noisician Akio Mokuno and video artist and "chaos poet" 99 Hooker. In the right corner stand free improv guitarist and pianist Ernesto Diaz-Infante and guitarist Chris Forsyth. This album was recorded in the studio in one take, with real-time manipulations and mixing by Ross Bonadonna (although some vocal overdubs were added later). There are two pieces. The 19-minute "Possum Ridge Paralyzer" is preceded by the six-part, 32-minute "Das Capital Crime." 99 Hooker rants like the postmodern beat poet that he is while the other musicians try to adapt. Interactions between the Diaz-Infante/Forsyth duo and Mokuno are interesting, but the whole project fails to captivate. The proposition is convincing enough, but it doesn't suck the listener in. Highlights include part two of "Das Capital Crime," where Diaz-Infante plays piano, and part six, where the poet enumerates a few pop music events "we should'ave seen coming." Anywhere else things tend to linger on and move around aimlessly (when they're not drenched in echo). The duo of guitarists has recorded stronger material.
