A collection of 15 mostly bluegrass instrumentals, this set is hardly the ultimate banjo album (as the title boldly states) although there several striking tracks here, including a blistering "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" from Sonny Osborne, a syncopated "High Steppin'" by Pete Wernick, and a fluid, intricate, and impressive "Turkish March" from
Scott Vestal. A little more variety would have helped, since the banjo is capable of a lot more than just high speed,
Earl Scruggs-derived pieces like these. It is a banjo album, just not the ultimate one. ~ Steve Leggett
