This Tommy Olivencia effort marks the first collaboration of the successful bandleader with first-rate singer Frankie Ruiz, where his fresh, high-key voice was essential for the phenomenal results it achieved, and with the band's solid reputation, it cemented him as the certifiable salsa superstar he would come to be know as. "Primero Fui Yo" was a well-promoted hit, but "Misteriosa Mujer," a son montuno beautifully arranged by Ray Santos, and "La Suplicante" (composed by Laura Sanchez) are fabulous gems, rich in stunning, brassy sonority. Olivencia's superb musicians make this recording a joy. Watch for Juancito Torres on trumpet solos on "Misteriosa Mujer" and "Los Golpes...," which provide notable proof of the band's creative prowess.
