More than thirty years after starting out in 1988, Necronomicon have clearly not lost any of their rage and wickedness and it goes to show on Unus. The group from Quebec, led by the untiring Rob “The Witch” Tremblay (voice, bass and guitar) sign here 40 minutes of blackened death, embellished with an almost symphonic sound à la Dimmu Borgi or Septicflesh; indeed, we find Gerlioz, the keyboardist from Dimmu Borgi, on the opening track From Ashes Into The Flesh. Necronomicon do not go for subtleties and it seems like each track seeks to be even darker than the last (especially the tracks Cursed MMXIX and Singularis Dominus with its infernal blast), supported by a death voice that’s more sombre than ever and an epileptic drum kit which packs a punch. One of the best in the business. © Théo Roumier/Qobuz
