The Four Seasons, led by Frankie Valli's soaring near-soprano vocals, had little success with singles for the RCA, Decca, Cindy, and Gone labels in the late '50s and were getting work as backup vocalists when they began working with Philadelphia producer Bob Crewe in 1962, and the results were immediate, thanks in part to the songwriting of Crewe and group member Bob Gaudio. Signing to Vee-Jay Records, the Four Seasons scored right out of the gate with the number one hit "Sherry" that same year, and followed it with another big hit, "Big Girls Don't Cry," both shaped by Valli's distinctive voice. An album, Sherry & 11 Others, was rushed out that year, as was the holiday album The 4 Seasons Greetings. This set combines both of those 1962 LPs, and adds in four additional tracks, including another big hit single, "Walk Like a Man," to make a chronicle of this fine quartet's first year in the pop spotlight.
