Plenty of prog rock is heavy as plenty of metal is complex so it makes perfect sense for a band like North Carolina’s A Hero A Fake to dabble in adventurous structures.VOLATILE doesn’t noodle around, however. Instead it funnels instrumental acumen into outright metalcore heaviness. The focus is on rhythm as much as power, calling to mind '90s post-hardcore bands like Iceburn and Quicksand. A Hero's chops are on display on both the anthemic guitar workout “Terminal” and the secretly poppy “Medieval.” And when it’s time to let it rip, as on massive opener “Super Woman,” they deliver.
