One of the less original electroclash/nu wave revival outfits,
Soviet, a quintet from Brooklyn, has a sound that is completely buried in the past. The group's primitive synth pop immediately recalls early
Depeche Mode. But although
Depeche Mode's songs were usually somber, there was always at least a little bit of fun in them. However,
Soviet's music is almost never upbeat. Even
Spandau Ballet, a band
Soviet also sounds like, had weird, fun videos and fairly catchy, though bland, songs. But
Soviet takes the least interesting elements of '80s new wave, like the simplistic I-like-you, you-don't-like-me lyrics and the ultra-basic synth sounds and, well, that's it. There are a couple of songs with OK arrangements, and "Candy Girl" is a decent tune, but the listener will want to avoid paying attention to the lyrics, which are completely banal.
