Queen Sarah Saturday's debut album sounds like the band deep down really wants to do a trippy but catchy album of Paisley Underground-style neo-psychedelia, something along the lines of the first releases by the Rain Parade. Unfortunately, that sort of drone pop (other than Rain Parade spinoff Mazzy Star) just wasn't in fashion in 1994, and so an inappropriate level of post-grunge heavy guitar is splattered all over these songs. It's really a shame because, under the bombast, it's clear that there are some good songs here. The rise-and-fall chord progression of "Seems" is extremely catchy, and the nearly jangle pop chord progression and melody of "Lift" cry out for a less sludgy arrangement. A few songs manage to rise above the bad production, especially the almost pretty "Shower," but overall this is a frustrating example of a record that could clearly be so much better than it is. ~ Stewart Mason
