An indie rock supergroup of sorts, with Mark Monnone (Lucksmiths), Andrew Kaffer (Kissing Book), Pete Cohen (Sodastream, and Kellie Sutherland (Architecture in Helsinki) turning in eight tracks and 22 minutes of hazy chamber pop, the Best Friends Group don't always live up to their cheery moniker. With everyone taking a turn on vocals, as well as writing their own parts for each track, there is a definite feeling of collaboration, however brief the project was. Tinkling guitars, brushed drums, and upright bass anchor a relaxingly low-key and organic mix, with boy/girl vocals lazily recounting strangely morose wonderings. Occasionally, tracks like "Any Kind of Pain" almost recall the more subdued sides of the Velvet Underground, with similar thudding bass drums and emotionally neutral vocals, but finding a less exhausted tension. Consistently rewarding and altogether pleasant, this is simply the sound of musical friends sharing an evening. ~ Matt Fink
