Philippine female rock trio Wyrd released their debut album,
Wired 2 Scream, in 2000. The band members are young and their voices aren't very developed. Consequently, the vocals mostly sound juvenile and devoid of any depth. In fact, a comparison can be made to the cartoon group
the Chipmunks, whose electronically induced "singing" was high pitched and squeaky. In addition, not only are Wyrd's vocals thin and weak, but they are also often off-key; the inferior vocals tends to overshadow everything else on the album.
The album's opening song, "Dreams I Like," is a mesh of jingle-jangle electric guitar and features a somewhat catchy melody. "Gone" is slow and tender and features pretty acoustic guitar playing. One of the album's most interesting songs is "In My Life," which has an enigmatic, introspective air about it. While the lyrics to this love song appear straightforward, the ending is a surprise, as the object of the girl's affection is dead, and the female lead has been singing to a memory. Once again, though, any potential charm the songs have are marred by lousy and juvenile vocals.
Supposedly, Wyrd consists of three members, which includes a guitarist, keyboardist, and drummer. However, the band's proficiency at playing these instruments is suspect because listed on the credits are a wide assortment of session musicians. Not only do the girls have trouble singing, it's probable they can't play their instruments very well, either. ~ David Gonzales
