With Ocean Between is Glider's first full-length. The drum tracks were recorded in Quebec, the guitar tracks in London, without Pascal Asselin and Gavin Baker ever being in the same studio. The music falls completely into the post-rock category. These short instrumental pieces, bucolic when featuring acoustic guitar, dreamy or melancholic with the electric, recall Meisha, Landing, Low, or even Mogwai. Some of Asselin's tracks feel a bit sloppy, but most flaws are embellished by Baker's delicate playing. "La Peur de la Différence" feels a little pathetic in its attempt to sound avant-rock-ish -- the changes in tempo and mood simply don't flow naturally. But "The Hour That Lasts the Longest," "Le Temps Qu'il Faut à Une Larme Pour Couler" (The Time Necessary for a Tear to Trickle Down), and the rockier "Route Nordique" all come across as strong musical moments. In general, the atmosphere remains relaxed, laid-back. Nothing comes abruptly forward to disturb the listener. If With Ocean Between had been 70 minutes long, it would have become tiresome and repetitive, but at 45 minutes it serves a portion that is just right. Glider's music is not by any means groundbreaking or even original, but its honesty and lack of pretentiousness will appeal to post-rock fans.
